Talking With Patients About Weight Loss

Research shows that having a discussion with your clients does result in weight loss. However, it’s vital that the provider be thoughtful about what they choose to say to their clients and how they say it.

I spent my final semester of nursing school learning from Elizabeth, a Certified Nurse Midwife who had a spiel for nearly every topic she wanted to discuss with her clients depending on her stage of pregnancy. Being in the office with Elizabeth I heard the same spiels over and over again but each time she would give one I would see the client’s face light up. I could see a change come over the client as she took in the information Elizabeth had carefully shaped over her years of practice, having figure out just what to say, how to say it and when to say it.  It was a skill in patience as Elizabeth answered the same questions over and over. It was a dedication to each client as an individual, a respect for the fact that this woman on the table, in the gown has never heard this before, even though my poor preceptor had given the various speeches to hundreds of women.

I’m inviting healthcare providers to figure out a spiel about weight loss that works for you and try to individualize it for your clients because it may change their lives. And read this article! It’s short, relevant and has great resources for providers and for clients.
